1月7日、屋久島では鬼火焚きと門回り、七草があります。
鬼火焚きは、主に1年の無病息災を願って、火を焚く行事です。永田では、朝8時から家々を回って、正月飾りを回収します。それを、前もって用意しておいた竹の柱の周りに置いていきます。竹の柱に鬼の絵を下げて準備完了。
区長の話が終わると、塩と酒をまき、年男年女が弓矢で鬼の絵を狙います。今年は、やりたい子供たちが全員挑戦していました。
火をつけると、炎がまきおこります。モウソウダケの柱に細いチンチクの束を巻き付けているので、タケのはじける音が中国のお祭りのようです。爆竹のようにと言いたいところですが、この竹が爆ぜる音に爆竹の方が似ているのでしょう。鬼の絵も爆音と共に燃え落ちていきました。
モウソウダケの柱が倒れると、だんだん火は小さくなっていきます。
